As you can see from the graphic above, Idaho state spending accelerated dramatically during the pandemic. And it continues to grow faster than inflation. This hurts the average citizen as well as Idaho businesses and works to dampen economic growth and overall prosperity. We must realize that no one will ever value a dollar more than the individual that earned it. When we invest our time, talent, and effort into earning a paycheck, we naturally value those earnings a great deal. We do not spend those earnings frivolously. No matter the use to which we put our money - for food, housing, savings, starting a business, church, or charity - we want to see those dollars well used. By extension, this means that we want to see the institutions that we support with our donations put those resources to good work. This is a natural check and balance that does not exist with government.
This natural economic law should dominate every budget and spending decision. It is an essential part of why capitalism is such an incredible engine for human progress. It is also a fundamental reason why government should be as small and limited as possible. By its very nature, government is an inefficient utilizer of resources. Politically driven capital is inefficient capital. This is a major advantage that we have over competitors such as China, as long as we ensure that government remains limited to those purposes best suited to it.
